Today's lecture at Chelsea College of Arts consisted of two parts: historical fans and modern fans. Firstly, Mary Kitson gave us an insight into the history of the European folding fan, from its symbolism in social situations to its evolution as a fashion accessory. Then, a young tutor showed us modern European fan designs made up of different materials, structures and abstract images, demonstrating the fusion of modern design and traditional craftsmanship.

I am impressed by modern fans. They are no longer just a tool for shading or cooling, but have turned into a medium for artistic expression. The design of these fans pushes the boundaries of tradition by using innovative materials such as plastic, metal and even recycled materials, demonstrating how designers can convey their personal creativity and concepts through their choice of materials and structures.

The images of the fans are also no longer limited to traditional flowers, birds or landscapes, but include abstract and symbolic motifs that often reflect contemporary artistic trends and social issues. This freedom of form makes each fan a storytelling tool, reflecting the artist's observations and commentary on the world.

Reflections and Questions
The relationship between materials and concepts: how can the thematic expression of an artwork be enhanced by the choice of specific materials?
Balance between functionality and decorativeness: How should one balance the relationship between designing an artwork that serves a practical function and expresses a deeper concept?
Integration of tradition and modernity: How do the references and adaptations of traditional elements in modern design affect the viewer's perception of the work?

Today's lecture not only increased my knowledge of the history of the fan, but also broadened my understanding of modern design practice. The exploration of the modern fan reminded me that any traditional element has the potential to be reinterpreted and innovated into a new artistic expression. This way of thinking will inspire me to find new forms of expression in my future artwork, to challenge the boundaries of tradition, and to create works that are both practical and convey profound concepts.
