Learning to pull at the ceramic workshop

Today I learnt to pull from Jims at the ceramic workshop, I recorded jims process on my mobile phone while making several failures myself, this is the step by step process so that I can keep reviewing it in my practice afterwards:

I. Kneading the clay:
This step is to remove air and impurities from the clay and ensure that the clay is uniform.

2.Setting the centre point:
Use the strength of the small fish to lift the clay several times to make it stable and even. This is a very technical step, and I find that I often struggle to accurately locate the centre point, resulting in an uneven thickness of the container.

3.Opening:
Use your thumb to tilt the opening downwards at a 45 degree angle.

4.Lifting:
This was the most challenging part of the process. Due to my difficulty in controlling the strength and speed of my hand, I was often unable to match the rotational speed of the machine, resulting in broken containers.

Lifting is a process that requires great skill and patience. Each step requires precision and a deep understanding of the material. I encountered many challenges, especially in centring the point and lifting the shape. I realised that I needed more practice and practice to refine these skills. This experience was not only a lesson in pottery technique, but also an exercise in patience and care, and I look forward to enriching the form of my work through this technique in the future.
