1. Design Concept (Sketch 1)
In my initial sketches, I explored using wood as a base to create a series of everyday objects, such as trays, tabletops, and other kitchenware. These objects will have surfaces layered with linoleum and other materials to create a tactile contrast, reflecting the theme of “The Lost Sense of Touch.” The combination of different materials will highlight the difference between natural textures and synthetic, digital elements, emphasizing the importance of touch in daily life and drawing attention to the growing disconnect between the physical world and our increasingly digital lives.
2. Moodboard
To inspire the surface patterns and forms, I created a moodboard exploring different visual concepts. My key inspirations include:
(1)Foam textures: Representing softness and fragility, symbolizing the light and fleeting nature of human touch and interaction with the physical world.
(2)Data streams and digital networks: These patterns represent the virtual world, where information flows continuously but lacks tactile, sensory engagement, showing the intangible and touchless nature of the digital realm.
(3)Organic forms: Inspired by natural, flowing shapes like leaves, waves, and veins, these forms represent the rich tactile experiences of the natural world, which we are gradually losing.
(4)Broken yet connected objects: This concept reflects the tension between fragmentation and connection, symbolizing how digital technology both weakens and, in some ways, connects our sensory experiences.
3. Reflection on Early Sketches
(1)Materials: When exploring different materials for this project, I need to carefully consider how linoleum, wood, and materials like metal or acrylic can work together harmoniously, both visually and in terms of touch.
(2)Patterns: Creating patterns that are abstract yet represent data streams or broken connections is a challenge. I also need to ensure that these patterns align with the overall design aesthetic of the objects.
(2)Practicality: While focusing on visual and tactile impact, I must also ensure that the objects remain functional for everyday use. The geometric forms need to be visually distinct while still being practical and user-friendly.
4. Next Steps
(1)Continue refining the sketches and exploring different shapes and material combinations.
(2)Conduct small-scale experiments to test how linoleum and other materials can be combined on different surfaces.
(3)Further develop the mood board to solidify the visual and tactile themes I want to express in the final objects.
