As a Chinese, it is a unique experience to review the history of my country from an overseas perspective. In the exhibition "China's Hidden Century", I saw the Treaty of Nanjing, familiar from history books, which marked the beginning of the tragedy of China's official fall into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal state. The Qing Dynasty embroideries and ceramic artefacts in the exhibition demonstrated the level of sophistication and craftsmanship of the era.
What attracted me most to this exhibition was its unique lighting effects and the design of the browsing route. The exhibition guides the viewers from the perspective of an unnamed woman in the late Qing Dynasty, using the techniques of silhouette and projection, together with the characters' self-dialogue on the curtain, to subtly create a sense of the heaviness of history and the changes of the times. This presentation not only made me feel the historical transition from glory to decline, but also gave me a deep appreciation of the powerlessness and struggle of ordinary people in a feudal society.
"China's Hidden Century" is a profound cultural and historical experience. It is not only a review of China's history, but also an in-depth exploration of the emotions of the people behind the history and the changes in society. The experience had a strong impact on my cognition and emotions, giving me a more comprehensive and deeper understanding of history and stimulating my thoughts on cultural heritage and historical memory.
